Cleanroom Technology

Semiconductor and integrated circuit developments continue to proceed at an incredible pace. The industry as a whole has gotten to this point of incredible complexity through the process of countless breakthroughs and developments in wafer fab processing. Today’s wafer fabs are some of the most complex buildings in existence worldwide. Cleanroom Technology is an 8-hour online course that offers an overview look into the design, building, and implementation of a modern semiconductor manufacturing fabrication facility, including the fundamental piece of the fabrication facility, known as a cleanroom. We place special emphasis on the important items associated with a cleanroom, and we summarize the current issues related to cleanroom technology. This course is a must for every manager, engineer and technician working in the semiconductor industry, building semiconductor facilities, also known as fabs, or supplying tools to the industry.

By focusing on the basics of each aspect of the cleanroom and the issues surrounding them, participants will learn why certain techniques are preferred over others. Our instructors work hard to explain how semiconductor manufacturing works without delving heavily into the complex physics and mathematical expressions that normally accompany this discipline.

What Will I Learn By Taking This Course?

Participants learn basic but powerful aspects about the semiconductor industry. This skill-building series is divided into two segments:

  1. Basic Construction Steps. Participants learn the fundamentals of fab construction principles that are used in the industry today.
  2. Fab Requirements that Impact Cleanroom Technology. It is important to understand how wafer fab processing impacts the needs of the cleanroom. Participants learn how factors such as power, HVAC, filtration, and chemical use impact fab use in current generation integrated circuits.

Course Objectives

  1. The course will provide participants with an overview of semiconductor cleanrooms and their requirements.
  2. Participants will understand the basic concepts behind site selection, layout and the construction steps.
  3. The course will identify the key issues related to each of the processing techniques and their impact on contamination control.
  4. Participants will be able to identify the basic items that need to be addressed to ensure optimal and “low” power usage in the fab.
  5. Participants will understand how air conditioning, humidity, and power are interrelated.
  6. Participants will gain an understanding of the chemicals and gasses used in a modern cleanroom fabrication facility.
  7. The course will provide an introduction to the Automated Material Handling Systems (AMHS) that are used to move 300mm wafer lots around the cleanroom facility.
